Toyota Camry sedan to be produced in India, price cut possible

Toyota Camry will soon be assembled in India at the Japanese automaker’s plant in Bangalore. With this the India bound Camry will be produced in July and an August launch is on the cards. The mid class luxury sedan by Toyota is one of the most popular cars worldwide and it starts at a price range of Rs 21.58 lakh in India. With the production in house, it is expected that the localization content may also increase and thus the Toyota Camry price may also come down a little bit which will make it more affordable in the Indian market. Currently, the luxury car is being imported in India as a completely built unit.

Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director (marketing) Toyota India has informed reporters at the flag off ceremony of exports of Toyota Etios sedan and Toyota Etios Liva hatchback to South Africa on April 4. Currently, the company imports around 300 Toyota Camry cars annually as CBUs. Singh also reportedly said that the plan to begin production of Camry in India had an initial jolt due to the recent hike in excise duties in the Union Budget but the company has decided to go with it still.

Speaking on the overall focus of Toyota India, Singh said that the car company will be focusing the semi-urban and rural markets to further boost its sales. The number of dealerships will also be increased to 225 by this year end, he said in a report. The company also plans to increase the localization content of its cars in India. Currently it is 70 percent for Etios which will be increased to 90 percent, Toyota Innova and Toyota Fortuner have 50 percent localization and these two will also get more local content in the next two years. Besides this, the Japanese auto maker will also be increasing the production in India with an investment of Rs 898 crore. Toyota plans to take production to 3.10 lakh units at its two plants in Bangalore in the next one year.
