Expectations are that the Etios platform might also be introduced on the Thailand shores by 2013 under the Eco Car project by the Thailand government. If the Etios platform gets approval for the Thailand Eco Car project, it will be the fifth car after Suzuki Swift, Honda Brio, Nissan Micra and Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback to join the Eco Car Project fleet. The cars under the Eco Car Project are renowned for their great fuel efficiency.

With the encouragement of fuel efficient cars, the Thailand government has projected to curtail down its fuel import. To make this plan practical, the Thai government has initiated for the Eco Car project under which, it will promote the fuel efficient cars that will have the minimum qualifying mileage of 20 Km/l. The company has another qualifying criteria to comply with the Eco Car project i.e. the car should have emission of less than 120 grams of CO2 per kilometer.  The Thai government has given third condition that the car maker should locally manufacture the car, that too with minimum investment of 150 million US$.

In addition, the car manufacturer should also have minimum production of 100,000 cars from the 5th year of manufacturing. Under the Eco Car project, the manufacturers would get several tax benefits, lesser excise duty and choice to export a part of Eco Car project production. Therefore, it is all quite clear that the auto-grand, Toyota will have to meet with all these conditions if it aims to become a part of Eco Car Project.
