BMW 3 series, 5 and 6 series recall due to battery cable cover defect

BMW has declared a recall of its 1.3 million cars world over following a defect in the battery cable cover. This is perhaps the largest recall by the German car maker in many years and experts believe that the number is bigger than expected. The Recall will be affecting all BMW 5 Series and BMW 6 Series car that were produced in a period of eight years between 2003 and 2010 with both years included. As per the media reports, the car maker has though clarified that it has received no reports of an accident or casualty due to the fault but it will carry out the recall as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, reports also came in that some BMW 3 Series sedans have also been recalled following some problem with the head restraints in US as well.

Though there is no clear information about the recall affecting 5 Series and 6 Series BMW cars in India, but being a global recall, Indian models seem to be included. As per the reports, the fault is in the battery cable cover that might pull off suddenly due to incorrect mounting and cause the vehicle not to start or may also cause short circuit or fire. Though there are no reports of an accident due to the faulty battery cable cover, but as a precautionary measure BMW has decided to replace the cable cover for free. However, there nine customers have reported a fault of this kind in their BMW car. Meanwhile, BMW has informed the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the defect and recall.

In another recall restricted to US only, the company has recalled 7,600 of BMW 3 Series sedans as soon as it found that the head restraints on the seats do not comply with the norms. The recall will be affecting all the 2012 models of the 3 Series sedan. This will also be rectified during the recall and the dealers will be informing the car owners about the recall and will be carrying out the necessary adjustment of the head restraints to make them comply with the norms.
