Chevrolet Spark starts local production in SA
The recent price cut of the Chevrolet Spark has triggered a price war in the small car segment in South Africa. The American car maker has reduced the price of Chevrolet Spark by seven percent on last Thursday. It was all possible due to the local production of the Spark in South Africa. Prior to this, the Spark was imported to SA as a completely built up unit and thus it had a higher price. On the other hand, now that the Spark is being produced in SA by General Motors with increased localization, the price has come down and it is expected that Spark will witness a further price cut soon.

The General Motor South Africa has also started delivering the Spark to the various local dealers. As per the sources, the Spark is now available at R107 500 inclusive of VAT which is very attractive for a hatch of this size and for a car that has so many features, peppy engine and high mileage. Notably, the Chevrolet Spark that is sold in South Africa and the US is the Chevrolet Beat that is sold in India. Just as the Beat has bagged tremendous response from car buyers in India, so is the new Spark is expected to have a similar response from car buyers after the recent price cut. Significantly, the Chevrolet Spark in India is offered as Chevrolet Spark Lite in South Africa.

As per the sources, the Chevrolet Spark LS which is the upper model will be sold for R 116 500 and is calculated to be over 9.7 percent cheaper than the one sold before the price cut. In SA as well, the Spark contends with Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto. Meanwhile the segment is going to have another major addition soon with Toyota planning to launch the Etios hatchback car here. Significantly, the Etios that will be launched in SA is the one that is available in India as Toyota Etios Liva.
