Hyundai car plant strike enters sixth day
The Maruti’s Manesar crisis was in fact a wild fire that has now reached other car makers as well. Hyundai’s manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur is the latest victim. The labor unrest at the plant continued to flare up for the sixth day as well. However, production of all Hyundai cars including Hyundai Eon, Hyundai i10, Hyundai i20 and other cars remained normal, said sources. Also, it is said that the percentage of striking employees has come down to less than five percent and thus there was no effect on the production.

Meanwhile, the labor unions and representative claim that the protest is rising and the number of employees entering strike has increased to 450 persons on the sixth day of the strike. Notably, the striking employees are demanding reinstatement of the employees who were dismissed in 2008. In addition to this, the employees on strike are also demanding recognition to Union. In the meantime, the labor unions have also demanded government to interfere in the matter to arrange a dialogue between the union and the management.

Hyundai management on the other hand is adamant and has denied to recognize any labor union that has been backed by some political organization. The management has already recognized one union and is denying on another as the proposed Union is backed by Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) which is a socialist organization of trade unions. Meanwhile, experts believe that if claims of the striking employees are true that over 450 employees are on strike then it is a matter of worry as the total permanent workers are 2007 at the plant. Also, if the strike continues and it amasses more support, it is quite obvious that production of some of the vehicles will be hampered. Already some reports suggest that the present unrest has also to an extent disrupted production but Hyundai has denied all such claims.
