Hyundai Eon encounters a slowdown in sales

The most anticipated small car Eon from the stable of Korean automaker Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL) is facing a low in terms of its sales, as after every 100 enquiries a mere 10 cars are sold; which calculates around 10 percent sales conversion.

Hyundai Eon was launched amid October, the month that carried promising festive season along with fuel prices at peak and higher interest rates which resulted in a lukewarm response and these can be termed as major reasons for this downfall in sales of the small car. At the time of small car launch the company was riding high with the success of Verna Fluidic. According to the reports around 9,000 Eons were sold in October.

HMIL, Director Sales and Marketing-Mr. Arvind Saxena said that the bookings are lower as compared to the expected, as the common man for whom this affordable car is developed, is under the burden of mounting petrol prices and increasing rate of interest. The company has aimed the first time car buyer, who is sensitive to take out money especially when he may have brought home-loans and refuses to increase his EMI load, he added.

Hyundai Eon contends with Maruti Alto, the bestselling car till date for the company. It is available in six variants and price ranges from INR 2.69 Lakhs (ex showroom Delhi) for base variant to top end variant at INR 3.71 Lakhs (ex showroom Delhi).

Prior to its launch HMIL had send off about 13,503 cars to its dealerships, but could only witness sales of 9,000 cars, as per the industry sources.

Mr. Saxena seemed confident in saying that in the coming months the interest rates are sure to come down, the company expects more bookings as compared to current, which will facilitate them to accomplish the yearly sales target. A sale of 140,000 to 150,000 cars in the initial year of small car launch is the target of the company, also the car will now focus on smaller cities in order to attain the sales numbers, he added.

Apart from sales by their vendors the company is engaged in the publicity campaigns for the small car, may it be at Metro stations in Delhi or a display on the main road junction, from where a lot of people pass daily, along with mobile vans and sales person to demonstrate vehicle features and test drives.
