Hyundai facing labor problem at Sriperumbudur plant

At a time when the leading car makers in the country are gearing-up to make the most of the high demand in the upcoming festive season, the second largest car maker Hyundai Motors is reported to be struggling with labor problem at their Sriperumbudur plant. As per the recent media reports, the production of Hyundai cars is getting affected at this plant as the workers of the company’s logistics department are deliberately going slow, in order to show solidarity with the on strike temporary workers.

The temporary workers who handle logistics at the company’s plant are reportedly on strike at the Sriperumbudur plant. The striking workers have submitted a 41 demand charter to the management which includes the demand of wage hike in line with the recent hike in the wages of Maruti Suzuki workers at the Gurgaon and Manesar plant.

Any bad impact to the production at this juncture could impact company’s market share significantly as the festive season is just around the corner and there is a huge demand for the Hyundai i10 and Hyundai Verna.

Learning from their past mistakes, the country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki has recently hiked the wages of their workers in the starting of this month, fulfilling a long standing demand. But the move has given force to the demand of wage hike by the workforce of other manufacturers in the Indian automobile industry, which could lead to further labor tensions in near future if manufacturers don’t consider hiking wages.

It has a wide range of cars in its India portfolio including the small car Hyundai EON, popular hatchbacks Hyundai i10 and Hyundai i20, entry level sedan Hyundai Accent, the much in demand mid-size sedan Verna, recently launched Hyundai Elantra and luxury sports utility vehicle Hyundai Santa Fe.

Hyundai is now the second largest car company in India. And it had launched i10 a couple of years ago.
