Maruti car sales dip by 8 percent in Feb- Dzire, Ertiga again best selling Maruti cars

It can only happen in India and it is Maruti India that can do it. Interestingly, the utility vehicle segment that consists of Maruti Ertiga has gained an increase in sales by 2490 percent. The car maker sold over 5957 cars in this segment including Ertiga, Maruti Grand Vitara and Maruti Gypsy. Another striking thing about Maruti car sales in February is that it is only two segment that are represented by Maruti Swift Dzire and Ertiga that are in green (well above green) while all other segments including Maruti Alto 800 are in dark red. This has led to an impact on overall domestic sales and resultantly Maruti India’s sales in February this year slid by 9 percent as compared to the same month last year.

Thus if the health of the industry is to be gauged, it is Maruti’s sales that is sufficient. Individual cars can perform well but it is sure that the overall scenario is grim. In all, the car maker sold around 1.1 lakh cars last month and registered an overall fall in sales by 8 percent. This includes both domestic as well as export sales.

The passenger car super compact segment that currently has only Swift Dzire grew second highest with 21.6 percent. On the other hand, Passenger cars mini segment that has Maruti 800, Maruti Alto series and A-Star as well as Wagon R witnessed a decline of around 16 percent. But this segment remained the highest volume segment with over 41311 unit sales. In all, the Maruti sales chart of February 2013 depicts a competition in terms of highest negative growth instead of positive growth.

Again, the sales chart has reiterated that Maruti Kizashi must be phased out as it had only four takers in the last month compared to 14 unit sales in February 2012. Maruti SX4 sales too dropped by over 89 percent. Meanwhile, Maruti car exports in the last month got a marginal increase by 2.8 percent. Thus it is a grim situation for Maruti both in India and in its export destinations as a less than two figure growth does not mean anything.
