Maruti's production coming back to normal

India's largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki announced that it would resume production at its Manesar plant in Haryana, from this week. The company would resume production of its hatchback Maruti A Star and mid size sedan Maruti SX4 within one week.

The company faced problems in production routine when, on August 29, the workers at Manesar plant refused to sign the good conduct bond presented to them by the management, and went on strike. The 950 permanent workers were stopped from entering the plant premises without their signatures on the good conduct bond. The company wanted to make sure that there were no more quality problems that were then being discovered quite regularly at the plant. The company has refused to compromise on any condition, and it has also dismissed 21 workers on the grounds of indiscipline. There has no resolution to the situation yet. The last meeting between the management and the workers was held on Sunday, but no solution could be found to the situation. The workers have demanded rehiring of the fired workers, but the company has refused their demands.

Till now Maruti Suzuki was focusing on resuming and normalizing production of its highest selling car Maruti Swift. Maruti Swift's bookings have already crossed the 100,000 mark, and the company wishes to cut the long waiting period. In order to do the same, the company had also started production of the Swift at the Gurgaon plant.

Maruti Suzuki has also hired some new workers to continue production at the Manesar plant. It is counting heavily on these new workers, supervisors and engineers to keep the production of Maruti Swift normal.

Maruti has issued a statement saying that the production of Maruti Swift has now exceeded the normal levels and now it is looking forward to resuming production of SX4 and A-Star at the Manesar plant.
