Mercedes renames to-be BMW X1 rival as Mercedes Benz GLA

As the recent updates in the car industry, Mercedes has reportedly renamed the Mercedes GLC/BLK to Mercedes GLA. Notably, the Mercedes GLC/BLK now known as Mercedes GLA is an upcoming SUV rival of BMW X1. Expected to be priced around Rs 25 lakh, the Mercedes SUV is also expected to be launched in India in the coming months. The BMW X1 on the other hand is a market leader and is giving sleepless nights to other carmakers such as Audi that is has stepped up its efforts to bring the Audi Q3 in India. Currently the car maker has two SUV offering in the Q Series – Audi Q5 and Audi Q7.

Meanwhile, the new Mercedes SUV Mercedes GLA will be launched in the middle of next year. The new name has been adopted in line with the latest nomenclature adopted by the German car maker. The GLA will be based on the MFA architecture and thus will have a close similarity with the A and B Class Mercedes cars. To be put slight over four meters, the Mercedes SUV will offer it in two body styling – three door and five door. At about 4400 mm and a width of 1800 mm, the SUV will have 500 litres of storage space and a seating for five people. As per the updates, the four cylinder petrol and diesel engine options will be there on the GLA.

Reports also suggest that the GLA will be spearheading India just after the international launch as Mercedes is fast loosing its grip over the luxury car market and has already lost the title to Audi and BMW recently. The new Mercedes SUV is believed to bring the sales back on track in competition with the BMW X1 which is doing more than expected at a price tag of Rs 25 lakh.
