New Volkswagen Passat coming in two years, to be build on MQB platform
Volkswagen seems to have high aspirations from its new MQB platform which is expected to be the platform for its premium sedan Volkswagen Passat. The next generation Passat based on the MQB platform will be ready in two years. The very same platform will also be the base for Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Jetta as well besides Skoda Fabia hatchback. Apart from being versatile, the new platform will also enable the German car maker to share a lot of components among these cars resulting in drastically low production costs.

The MQB platform will also be used in the production of Audi cars thus despite of being based on the same platform, the Volkswagen group cars will all be different from each other with respect to the exteriors, interiors and overall appearance. Use of a single platform for models across its group brands is considered as a major step by Volkswagen as where it will bring cost of these cars down, it will also help VW share a lot of components between the similar platform cars. The sharing will also enhance production and help Volkswagen meet growing demand for its cars.

The 2014 Passat is expected have the plug-in hybrid engine with the new platform in. Similar to other cars, the Volkswagen Passat will also have a longer wheelbase and thus it will have more interior space and comfort inside. It is also expected that the new Passat could take new body forms as the MQB platform is versatile and can accommodate many body forms options. Passat Convertible and Passat Coupe are the two most probable ones. After being mounted on a new platform, the Passat will have new engine configuration as well. The new engines are expected to be much more powerful than the existing ones. A 170 bhp, 350 Nm engine is expected to power the new Passat.
