VW Beetle electric, new Jetta hybrid unveiled at Detroit Show

Auto World is getting hot hotter and hottest in this winter. After the Auto Expo 2012 in India, the Detroit Motor Show is creating much buzz in the auto world. German car heavyweight Volkswagen was comparatively passive at the Auto Expo in New Delhi by just showcasing its XL1 concept car, new Volkswagen Touareg, Volkswagen Beetle and Think Blue, Drive Blue theme but it is also grabbing accolades at the Detroit show. Volkswagen has unveiled the Volkswagen Beetle electric and all new Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid. Both these Volkswagen cars will be launched across the world somewhere this year.

The unveils are said to be the part of Volkswagen AG’s plan to take over the #1 position in US by 2018 by giving a direct fight to General Motors. The VW Beetle electric and VW Jetta hybrid have been unveiled with the aim that the future of mobility is hybrid and electric technology. Mr Martin Winterkorn, CEO & Chairman, VW Group reportedly said that VW Group wants to be the number one car maker in US and all these launched will help it making this dream come true in US.

The new Jetta that was unveiled at the Show has a 1.4L TSI engine that produces 150PS power. It also has an 20kW capacity electric motor. The power from the motor and the engine is transmitted to the wheels with the help of the latest seven speed DSG gearbox making it frugal as well as powerful. The motor is powered by 220volts battery spaced under the rear seats and purely on battery, the new Jetta hybrid can go at an average speed of 70 kmph to 2 kilometers.

The Volkswagen Beetle on the other hand is powered by lithium ion batteries and can deliver a maximum power of 85 kWh. Being purely an electric car, the VW Beetle lacks gasoline engine. The exteriors of the VW Beetle have also been modified and it looks bigger than the present Beetle. It has an acceleration of 10.9 seconds and is expected to proved one of the best electric cars.
