Hyundai i10 diesel may be launched in India

Hyundai i10 would be made available with diesel engine in India if the same trend of demand for diesel cars continues in the coming days and if the Centre does not impose excise duty on diesel cars. India is still waiting for diesel Hyundai i10 while in the European market i10 hatchback has already been launched. It comes with 1.1 litre three cylinder CRDi diesel turbo engine, which is fuel efficient too as it gives 23 Kmpl. The engine generates 74 Bhp while its peak torque is 155 Nm. The media reports suggest that Hyundai i10 with diesel engine will be launched in India soon.

Hyundai 10 has achieved a major success in the India market powered by petrol engine. But, the demand trend is changing with the rise in petrol prices. The sources said that when the other companies are all set to launch their diesel cars, it would not be wise for Hyundai to continue selling petrol cars as this may affect the sale of its cars badly. For producing Hyundai i10 diesel, the company will have to construct a plant in India. The company may take the decision soon on it. But, for the time being, Hyundai Motors is waiting for the Centre’s decision which is planning to increase excise duty on diesel cars. If the Centre imposes more taxes on diesel cars, it would directly affect the prices of the diesel cars. The diesel cars would become more expensive and the rise in prices would further affect its demand. So, if the government does not pass the proposal of increasing taxes, there are all the possibilities that the Indian car market would witness various new diesel variants of existing cars.

At present, Korea is exporting turbo engines to India for Hyundai cars. Setting up a plant for diesel engines is not new, as two years ago, Hyundai had the same plans to construct a diesel engine plant with an investment of Rs 400 crore but due to certain reasons, the plan failed to take off. Where Hyundai is gearing up for a big show with the diesel powered Hyundai i10 that is expected to pull volumes in the country in the hatchback segment, there is another car maker Renault that is preparing to bring some action in the SUV segment. With the launch of Renault Duster SUV, the French car maker hopes to have sales matching the sedan segment as the SUV is expected to be priced just the same as that of any sedan.
