Maruti 800 becomes a part of History

Bringing curtains down on the glorious saga of the Maruti 800 model, Maruti Suzuki BSE 1.57 % has stopped production of the iconic car brand that had been carrier for millions of Indian middle class families, since last month. Launched in 1983 with price tag of Rs. 50,000 Maruti received an overwhelming response from buyers and with its launch it became the dream car of every middle class family and received the tag of 'People's Car'. It would be interested company kept on introducing new features in 800 going through requirement and feedback received from customers, which played an important role in establishing it as one of the highly demanded car in Indian car market for long time.

"When we started the project, none of us knew, how the reception would be. We had started with a very low ambition. When we were setting up a 1 lakh units plant, people said, it won't even sell 40,000. The booking of 125,000 at the beginning proved all the skeptics wrong. 800 is the car that made Maruti," recalls RC Bhargava, chairman of Maruti  BSE 1.57 % Suzuki.
